A New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Certified Clean Heat contractor since 2019, Energy Catalyst has established itself as an industry leader through sustained investment in research and innovation, holding five issued U.S. utility patents, with additional pending, in geothermal technology. The solution portfolio has been backed by millions of dollars in NYSERDA research funding and an active partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to scale next-generation heat pump manufacturing.
Beyond manufacturing, Energy Catalyst operates an International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) certified training program that develops the skilled installer network powering geothermal adoption across the country.
Our Goal: to make geothermal the new industry standard. To do this, we’ve built a vertically integrated geothermal solution company that uses innovation and domestic manufacturing to reduce costs and improve customer ROI.

Matthew Desmarais
A Mechanical Engineering graduate of Clarkson University, Matthew spent his early career in New York State's HVAC industry before working internationally as an industrial energy recovery engineer and project developer for EcoGreen Energy in France, Spain, and Belgium, delivering energy efficiency projects for global manufacturers including Stella Artois, Coca-Cola, and Valeo.
Since founding Energy Catalyst Technologies in 2019, Matthew has scaled the company from a from a start-up to a recognized geothermal heating and cooling innovator through an unwavering commitment to worldclass engineering.
Under his leadership, Energy Catalyst has become a NYSERDA-Certified Approved Geothermal Contractor, secured Department of Energy funding to scale U.S. heat pump manufacturing, and built a growing portfolio of utility patents in geothermal and heat pump technology. Matthew is a sought-after voice in the industry, presenting at New York Geothermal Energy Organization (NY-GEO), the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and served as lead designer on award-winning commercial retrofit projects.
He holds credentials as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP), is an Engineer-in-Training pursuing Professional Engineer licensure, is a proud member of the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA), and was a member of the Albany Business Review’s 2026 “40 under 40” awardees.
